This weeks assignment was to create a hero, villain, and an animation pertaining the two describing how the two interact, and move. My three Critiques are of Will Growther, Ryan Nord, and Paige Kelley. Their blogs can be found in the links below.
Ryans was definitely one of the better ones in the class. It was smoother and had a faster frame per second than the other animations. WMU is the protagonist, and is the hero. His power is zapping things The colors were really good I thought. Instead of the typical black and white scheme, there were colors that popped. Color really had an impact on the entire theme. The saturation of the red was very impressive, however the one thing I would change would be either the brightness of the entire piece, or the Hue of the yellow. I didn't like how the lightning blended in, and didnt contrast to the background. There was use of tension and release as well, as the villains would appear on the screen, appear to make a threat, which would cause the tension within the film, and then release as the superhero would resolve the problem. There was no definite structure to the short film though. The animation was more or less like a video game where one had to run back and fourth on the screen, and destroy any of the threats that were apparent at the time.
Paige had a different approach to her video. In this video, there was a hero and a villain all in one animation for this piece. There was a girl who was names Regina, who was the antagonist, that would carry around her sack of mean comments, and would be the "rude stuck-up cheerleader type". The protagonist, Janice, was a very different type of super hero. What was so different, was her lack of color. The protagonist, or the hero, had little saturation, darker hues, low brighness, deep and significant shadows, and a sad mood. I thought it was neat how this contrasted to the basic and noteworthy hero film, however, I could see how this would become confusing on who is the hero and villain if the characters weren't previously introduced. The villain is so happy, and cheerful looking it really threw me off. It was something that I would more than likely change if I were able to. Consciously, I was not aware of the hero or villian, and Subconsciously, i think it is off how the creators decided the costumes that they did. However, I did enjoy how it was a different world called "girl world" and all of the other little girls were so happy when they were saved. This was a relatively smooth animation, not extremely choppy, and there were abundant drawings to collaborate the picture.
